Many BIM objects look right and still cause problems. The geometry matches the product, but connectors are missing, parameters are named inconsistently or values are stored as text instead of numbers. The model looks complete — the information is not.
Four questions to ask of every object
- Geometry: is the level of detail appropriate for the project phase?
- Connectors: can the object be connected to systems (air, water, power) in the planning software?
- Parameters: are properties named, typed and filled consistently?
- Classification: can the object be found and evaluated using a recognised system?
Standards such as VDI 3805 / ISO 16757 and classification systems such as ETIM or ECLASS provide a shared structure. Automated validation turns data quality from an opinion into something that can be measured.
